Review | A Game Of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire (Audio Book)

I am a big fan of Game Of Thrones television series and until recently, I had never picked up any of George R. R. Martin’s famous Epic Fantasy novels. With the 7th Season of Game of Thrones underway, I thought it would be a good time for me to dive deep into the land of Westeros.

Roy Dotrice’s narration of A Game Of Thrones was almost flawless. As some may know, the first book alone had a lot of characters even if their appearance may be brief but the narrator masterfully gave each character its own unique voice. It was enjoyable to listen to different characters conversing while taking a mental note on which character Roy Dotrice sounds the best. He may not be able to replicate a female voice but the unique voices done by him were enough to differentiate various women of A Game of Thrones. Despite having an amazing voice acting, there were a few brief moments when the narrator failed to get out of character while reading the narrations.

Listening to A Game Of Thrones audio book was a rewarding experience. I found myself being absorbed by story compared to the television series because there were a lot more of explanations in the book. Unlike the show, snippets of the world’s lore were briefly told and it gave a whole new depth to the story’s setting. Sitting back, closing my eyes and opening the doors of imagination, it was easy to visualise as certain events happened throughout the story.

A Game of Thrones is full of intrigues, deaths and devious plots as the nobles vie for power in the Seven Kingdoms. GRRM has a way to make the characters likeable only to have them meet with an untimely end. Although I knew the fates of most characters, it still felt as though I got beheaded at the orders from a child king each time a likeable character dies.

A Game of Thrones may be filled with emotional moments with Roy Dotrice’s splendid performance as a voice actor and reading, or listening if you are like me, the book proved to be a satisfying experience where readers can enjoy being in the world as the events unfold. I highly recommend fans of the series to start reading it if you have yet to in this well crafted Epic Fantasy book.
